Lime French Toast Custard

 

Lime French Toast Custard is the best breakfast to wake up in the morning to! Especially when your husband cooks and cleans it up!

I love Sunday’s because Matt always gets up tries to make a new recipe. We had cafe rio pork this week which was great because we were able to have the best leftovers! With that came a large bag of limes and we needed to make something with them. They boys loved and ate this french toast without complaining.

I personally love all citrus fruits and so any time we can incorporate that into a meal! Lime is my favorite candy flavor! Try this french toast custard, you won’t regret it!

 

 

 

 

 

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of french bread
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream 
  • 3 eggs
  • 3-4 Tbsp dark brown sugar 
  • 1-2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon
  • Zest 1 lime, lemon or orange

 

 

 

 

 

Directions

  1. Place onto a wire rack set in a rimmed baking sheet. Leave out overnight uncovered, or preheat the oven to its lowest temperature and place the bread in for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through. Either way, your bread should be nice and dry.

  2. For french toast custard, in a large bowl combine 1 ½ cups of heavy cream, 3 eggs, 3-4 tablespoons of dark brown sugar, 1-2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, the zest of a lime, lemon or orange, and a splash of the juice of the fruit you chose. Whisk together until fully combined. 

  3. Once the custard is ready, pour it into a cake pan or pie plate. Grab a piece of thickly cut bread and drop it into the custard, letting it sit for 20-30 seconds on each side. 

  4. Heat 2 tablespoons of melted butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the soaked bread to the skillet and let the bread fry for 3-5 minutes on each side, until golden brown. 

  5. Place onto a wire rack set in a rimmed baking sheet in a 350°F oven while you cook all of the pieces.

  6. Once every piece of toast is complete, stack on a plate, topped with butter and maple syrup
