French toast is already a breakfast superstar, but when you take it up a notch with a custard base and a pop of citrus zest? Oh honey, you’ve just entered brunch royalty.

This Lime French Toast Custard is creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced with a hint of tangy brightness. It’s the kind of dish that feels indulgent but also refreshing — like a vacation for your taste buds. The custard soaks into the bread, creating a soft, pudding-like texture inside with a golden, slightly crisp top. And that lime zest? It’s the little wink that makes everyone ask, “What’s your secret?”

This recipe is perfect for weekend brunch, holiday mornings, or even dessert with a dollop of whipped cream. And because I know you love more than just the recipe, I’ve packed this post with cooking tips, variations, kid-friendly ideas, grocery hacks, a leftover remix, and even a reader challenge so we can all share our own citrusy creations.

So grab your whisk, zest that lime, and let’s make a dish that will brighten your whole day.

I love Sunday’s because Matt always gets up tries to make a new recipe. We had café rio pork this week which was great because we were able to have the best leftovers! With that came a large bag of limes and we needed to make something with them. They boys loved and ate this French toast without complaining.

I personally love all citrus fruits and so any time we can incorporate that into a meal! Lime is my favorite candy flavor! Try this French toast custard, you won’t regret it!

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of French bread
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • 3 eggs
  • 3-4 Tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1-2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon
  • Zest 1 lime, lemon or orange

Directions

  1. Place onto a wire rack set in a rimmed baking sheet. Leave out overnight uncovered, or preheat the oven to its lowest temperature and place the bread in for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through. Either way, your bread should be nice and dry.

  2. For French toast custard, in a large bowl combine 1 ½ cups of heavy cream, 3 eggs, 3-4 tablespoons of dark brown sugar, 1-2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, the zest of a lime, lemon or orange, and a splash of the juice of the fruit you chose. Whisk together until fully combined.

  3. Once the custard is ready, pour it into a cake pan or pie plate. Grab a piece of thickly cut bread and drop it into the custard, letting it sit for 20-30 seconds on each side.

  4. Heat 2 tablespoons of melted butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the soaked bread to the skillet and let the bread fry for 3-5 minutes on each side, until golden brown.

  5. Place onto a wire rack set in a rimmed baking sheet in a 350°F oven while you cook all of the pieces.

  6. Once every piece of toast is complete, stack on a plate, topped with butter and maple syrup

🧑‍🍳 Cooking Tips

  • Bread Choice: Day-old bread works best — it soaks up the custard without getting soggy.
  • Zest Smart: Only zest the colored part of the citrus peel, not the white pith (it’s bitter).
  • Make Ahead: Assemble the night before, cover, and refrigerate. Bake in the morning for stress-free brunch.
  • Extra Creamy: Swap half the cream for cream cheese whisked into the custard for a cheesecake-like vibe.
  • Golden Top: Sprinkle a little extra brown sugar on top before baking for a caramelized crust.

🎨 Recipe Variations

  • Berry Burst: Add fresh blueberries or raspberries between the bread slices.
  • Nutty Crunch: Sprinkle chopped pecans or almonds on top before baking.
  • Chocolate Lovers: Toss in a handful of chocolate chips for a dessert-worthy version.
  • Tropical Twist: Use coconut milk instead of cream and add shredded coconut.
  • Holiday Flair: Swap lime zest for orange and add a pinch of nutmeg.

👩‍👧 Kid Tips

  • Let kids whisk the custard — it’s messy but fun.
  • Have them sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top before baking.
  • Serve with a side of fruit for a colorful plate.
  • Make “mini custards” in muffin tins for kid-sized portions.

🛒 Grocery Hacks

  • Buy day-old bread from the bakery — it’s cheaper and perfect for this recipe.
  • Store-brand cream and sugar work just as well as name brands.
  • Zest citrus before juicing — you’ll get double the use.
  • Freeze leftover bread slices for future French toast bakes.
  • Buy cinnamon in bulk — it’s cheaper and you’ll use it often.

♻️ Leftover Remix

  • French Toast Parfaits: Layer leftovers with yogurt and fruit for a quick breakfast.

  • Bread Pudding 2.0: Warm leftovers and drizzle with caramel sauce.
  • French Toast Sandwich: Use slices as “bread” for a sweet sandwich with Nutella or peanut butter.

💭 Final Thoughts

Lime French Toast Custard is proof that breakfast can be both comforting and exciting. It’s creamy, zesty, and endlessly adaptable — the kind of dish that makes people linger at the table, fork in hand, telling “just one more” story before they head out the door.

It’s also a reminder that sometimes, the simplest ingredients can create the most magical meals. With a little zest (literally) and a lot of love, you can turn ordinary bread into something extraordinary.

So here we are — you, me, and a custard bake that could brighten even the gloomiest morning. Lime French Toast Custard isn’t just breakfast; it’s a mood. It’s the smell of citrus in the air, the golden crust that cracks when you scoop in, and the reason someone will text you later asking, “Hey… do you have any more of that French toast left?”

I hope you’ll take this recipe, make it your own, and share it with the people who make your kitchen the happiest place in the house. And when you do, I want to see it — your twists, your plating, your “oops, I ate half before taking a photo” moments. That’s what makes this little community so much fun.

So go ahead — whisk that custard, zest that lime, and let’s make something wonderful together. Because at the end of the day, the best recipes aren’t just about the food… they’re about the joy we mix in along the way.
