🥧✨ Buttermilk Pie — The Sweet, Tangy Southern Classic You’ll Make Again and Again

Golden, silky, and just the right balance of sweet and tangy — this pie is proof that simple ingredients can create pure magic.

This Buttermilk Pie is the dessert equivalent of a warm hug from your favorite aunt — comforting, familiar, and just a little bit sassy. It’s a Southern classic that’s been winning hearts for generations, thanks to its creamy custard filling, buttery crust, and that subtle tang from the buttermilk that keeps each bite from being too sweet.

It’s:

  • Ridiculously easy — one bowl, no fancy equipment, and a store‑bought crust if you’re in a hurry.
  • Perfect for any occasion — holiday tables, Sunday dinners, or “just because” baking days.
  • A crowd‑pleaser — even people who “don’t like pie” will ask for seconds.

💬 Reader prompt: Are you a “serve it warm with ice cream” pie person or a “chilled with whipped cream” kind of pie lover?

It’s official! our 2023 bingo party is in the books! What did you eat? You ask…… not the traditional menu that you would expect.

As usual, we couldn’t have the traditional food that most families have for Christmas parties! lol!  No, turkey, or ham. Don’t get me wrong, I love that my kids want to explore new recipes, and flavors. It certainly has taken me out of my comfort zone…….which I think is good!

Our theme was southern cooking!!! I’m pretty sure this menu will show up again! We had chicken and waffles, my Zac, made gumbo, and Jessica made apple and peach turnovers. Cassie made a delicious coleslaw and gravy for the chicken!  I wasn’t sure that we had anyone bringing dessert so I did some research and look what I found!

You guys! This is so good!!!!!

You can garnish with fresh berries and cream or a little drizzle of caramel or chocolate would be divine!

Buttermilk Pie

Ingredients

  • 1 9″ pastry crust ( I used a frozen Marie Callender's deep dish)
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 Tbsp flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsps vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
  2. In a large bowl, add sugar and flour, and whisk to combine.
  3. Add the eggs, and whisk to combine.
  4. Add the butter, buttermilk, vanilla, and pinch of salt, lemon juice and whisk to combine. The batter will look a little curdled.
  5. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the unbaked prepared pie crust, and bake for 45 to 50 minutes.
  6. The center will be set when the pie is done.
  7. Remove from the oven, and let cool for at least 2 hours before serving.

👩‍🍳 Baking Tips for Pie Perfection

  • Room‑temp ingredients — helps everything blend smoothly.
  • Don’t overbake — the center should have a slight jiggle; it will set as it cools.
  • Shield the crust — if the edges brown too quickly, cover with foil.
  • Cool completely — this helps the custard set for clean slices.
  • Serve simply — this pie shines on its own, but a dollop of whipped cream never hurt anyone.

💬 Reader prompt: Do you like your custard pies with a little jiggle or fully firm?

🎨 Recipe Variations

  • Nutmeg Sprinkle — dust the top with nutmeg before baking for a warm spice note.
  • Citrus Twist — swap lemon juice for orange or lime juice.
  • Berry Topping — serve with fresh berries or a berry compote.
  • Chocolate Drizzle — add a thin drizzle of melted chocolate before serving.
  • Mini Pies — bake in muffin tins for individual servings.

🧒 Kid Tips

  • Let kids help measure sugar and flour (messy but fun).
  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra smiles.
  • Make mini versions so everyone gets their own.
  • Keep lemon juice light if your kids prefer less tang.

💬 Reader prompt: Parents — do your kids eat the crust first or save it for last?

🛒 Grocery Hacks

  • Buttermilk — make your own by adding 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup milk.
  • Pie crust — keep a few frozen crusts on hand for last‑minute desserts.
  • Butter — buy in bulk and freeze sticks for baking.
  • Vanilla — invest in pure vanilla for the best flavor.
  • Lemons — zest before juicing and freeze the zest for later.

Some pies are just pies. This Buttermilk Pie? It’s a slice of Southern sunshine. It’s the smell of butter and sugar baking together, the sight of a golden top just begging to be sliced, and the joy of that first forkful when the tangy custard meets the flaky crust.

I love that it’s flexible — you can keep it classic, dress it up, or make it ahead for stress‑free entertaining. It’s forgiving, too; even if your crust isn’t perfect or your filling has a tiny crack, it will still taste like something you’d proudly serve to friends and family. And it’s the kind of recipe that makes people linger at the table, chatting and reaching for “just one more bite.”
