Fondant is a life saver and the more you use it the easier it gets. We’ve made a plethora of cakes and we hate making them. They make me cuss honestly. Bless Matt’s soul for putting up with me.

We now only make them for our kids and maybe some cousins. Fondant is easier to make pretty than buttercream if you ask my opinion. Matt may not agree. We did fondant on our Yoshi cake from earlier this week. It turned out pretty good I think.

Homemade Marshmallow Fondant

Ingredients

  • 1 large bag of Jet Puffed mini marshmallows
  • 1/4 cup of shortening
  • 2 lbs. of powdered sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon of water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Microwavable bowl
  • Spatula
  • Plastic wrap

Homemade Marshmallow Fondant

Directions

  1. First you have to coat your work surface with a LOT of shortening. You do this so the fondant doesn’t stick to your countertop.
  2. You are going to dump the powdered sugar on the counter and create a well for your marshmallows.
  3. Grease your microwavable bowl with shortening. Next you’re going to dump your marshmallows into the bowl with the 1 tablespoon of water. Stir.
  4. Microwave the marshmallows for 30 secs at a time and stirring until the marshmallows seem soupy and the lumps are almost gone. Then mix in the vanilla or any other clear flavoring.
  5. Dump the marshmallows into the powdered sugar well. Grease your hands and then start folding in the powdered sugar until the majority of the powdered sugar. Knead until the fondant will be firm and clay like consistency.
  6. Coat with fondant with shortening and then wrap twice in plastic wrap. Allow to set for at least 24 hours. Do not refrigerate, you will hate your life. Roll out when you are ready to use.
  7. I dye the fondant after 24 hours and then let it sit another 12-24 hours before using it.
