Some cookies are good. Some cookies are great. And then there are Frosted Lemon Cookies — the kind that make you close your eyes on the first bite and think, “Yep, this is why I bake.”

They’re soft, tender, and bursting with fresh lemon flavor, topped with a creamy lemon frosting that’s equal parts tangy and sweet. Perfect for spring brunches, summer picnics, holiday cookie trays, or just a Tuesday afternoon pick‑me‑up.

💬 Reader prompt: Are you a “pile the frosting high” person or a “just a thin glaze” kind of cookie decorator?

I have always loved lemon in my Diet Coke but haven’t loved lemon desserts. Little by little I have become a big fan of lemon desserts. Cookies have always been my favorite dessert! You combine the two and nothing is better.

I just came to the realization that I’m not a big fan of Crumble. I know, I know, I’m crazy!!!! lol! I just love homemade cookies!

Frosted Lemon Cookies

Frosted Lemon Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

  • INGREDIENTS
  • 1 1/4 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup butter, room temperature
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 3 tablespoons lemon zest
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • FROSTING
  • 3 to 4 cups powdered sugar (depending the consistency you want)
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons lemon zest
  • 1 stick of butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.

  2. In a bowl, cream together sugar, sour cream and butter. Add the eggs, lemon zest and juice.

  3. Add flour, baking soda, baking powder and cream of tartar. Stir.

Form dough into golf ball size and place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes, until tops are cracked and just turning color.

FROSTING

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the powder sugar and butter until smooth. Gradually mix in the milk, lemon zest and juice with an electric mixer until smooth and stiff, about 5 minutes.

Notes

You can flatten the cookie, if you like! Make your balls a little larger and spread them apart on the cookie sheet. Take a glass, spray it with cooking spray, and dip into sugar. Gently press on the cookie ball. Add 2 minutes to cooking time because there is more dough.

💭 Final Thoughts

These Frosted Lemon Cookies are proof that bright, sunny flavors belong in every season. They’re soft, flavorful, and just the right mix of tangy and sweet — the kind of cookie that makes you want to bake another batch before the first one’s gone.

They’re also a great make‑ahead treat. Bake them the day before, store in an airtight container, and frost just before serving for maximum wow factor. And because they’re so easy to customize, you can make them your own every single time.

Here’s the thing about these cookies — they’re more than just dessert. They’re a kitchen mood‑booster, a coffee‑break companion, and a guaranteed way to make your home smell like a sunny afternoon. They’re the tender crumb meeting the creamy frosting in perfect harmony, the kind of bake that makes you feel like you’ve got your life together — even if you’re still in slippers at noon.

They’re also a conversation starter. Bring them to a gathering and watch people hover near the plate, debating whether to go for the prettiest frosting swirl or the biggest cookie. Someone will inevitably ask for the recipe, and you’ll get to smile knowingly as you hand it over.

And the best part? They’re forgiving. You can follow the recipe exactly, or you can play — add berries, herbs, or even a surprise filling. They’ll still turn out gorgeous and delicious.

So here’s my challenge to you: make them, share them, and tell me your twist. Did you go berry? Did you add lavender? Did you eat one warm from the oven with no plate, no fork, just pure cookie joy? (No judgment — I’ve been there.) Snap a pic, post it, and tag it so we can all drool together.

💬 Reader prompt: Should we do a “Citrus Baking Series” next? I’m thinking lemon bars, orange pound cake, and maybe even grapefruit cupcakes…

Until then, may your frosting be generous, your lemons be bright, and your baking days be full of joy.
