Deep Fried Corn on the Cob
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup yellow cornmeal
- 3/4 cup flour
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/3 cup white sugar
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 egg - beaten slightly
- 1 1/2 cup buttermilk
- ¾ gallon vegetable oil for frying
- 6 ears of corn on the cob – husked and left whole or cut in half horizontally
- 1/4 cup cornstarch for rolling corn in prior to frying - this helps the batter to stick
- 6 long or 12 halved wooden skewers.
- honey, for garnish
Instructions
- I used a deep fryer but if you don't have one, use a Dutch Oven and heat the oil to 375F.
- Combine corn meal, flour, salt, black pepper, sugar and baking powder in a medium bowl. Mix well.
- Combine egg and buttermilk in a medium bowl and mix well.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir just enough to moisten the batter.
- Stick the skewers at least half-way into each ear of corn.
- Place the cornstarch on a plate and roll each ear of corn in the cornstarch then tap off the excess.
- Pour the batter into a deep bowl - leave some room at the top so the batter won't overflow when corn is dipped into the batter.
- Hold the corn by the skewer and dip in and out of the batter. I had to use my hand to cover the batter on the corn. It looks like it won't stick but it will.
- Wipe off excess batter with your finger,
- Slowly and carefully, while holding the end of the skewer, dip the batter-dipped corn in the hot oil., and leave in the fryer.
- Turn the corn often until golden brown - approximately 3 to 5 minutes. Depending on how brown you desire.
- Set on a cooling rack which has been placed over paper towels.
- Repeat until all corn is cooked. Drizzle with honey!

👩🍳 Cooking Tips for the Best Deep Fried Corn on the Cob
- Oil temp matters — too cool and the batter soaks up oil; too hot and it burns before the corn cooks.
- Don’t skip the cornstarch — it’s the secret to batter that sticks.
- Work in batches — overcrowding drops oil temp and makes soggy corn.
- Serve immediately — crispy magic fades if it sits too long.
- Experiment with toppings — honey, hot sauce, parmesan, or chili powder.
🎨 Recipe Variations
- Sweet Heat — Drizzle with hot honey and sprinkle with cayenne.
- Mexican Street Corn Style — After frying, slather with mayo, cotija cheese, chili powder, and lime juice.
- Cheesy Dream — Add shredded cheddar to the batter for melty pockets.
- Garlic Herb — Mix garlic powder and parsley into the batter.
- Breakfast Twist — Serve with maple syrup and crispy bacon crumbles.
🧒 Kid Tips
- Cut cobs into smaller pieces for little hands.
- Let kids help dip corn in cornstarch (messy but fun!).
- Keep spice levels mild for younger palates.
- Serve with a side of ranch or ketchup for dipping.
🛒 Grocery Hacks
- Buy corn in bulk during peak season — freeze extras for later.
- Store-brand basics — flour, sugar, and cornmeal are pantry staples worth buying in big bags.
- Buttermilk shortcut — mix 1½ cups milk with 1½ tablespoons vinegar or lemon juice.
- Oil sales — stock up when vegetable oil is discounted.
- Multi-use skewers — great for grilling, fruit kabobs, and marshmallow roasting.

💭 Final Thoughts
This Deep Fried Corn on the Cob is proof that sometimes the simplest ingredients can create the biggest “wow” moments. It’s playful, indulgent, and perfect for making memories around the table — or the grill.
Some side dishes politely sit in the background. This one struts in, steals the spotlight, and gets a standing ovation.
The golden crunch, the juicy corn, the drizzle of honey — it’s a flavor and texture combo that makes people close their eyes and savor. It’s the kind of recipe that turns a regular BBQ into a full-on summer celebration.
I love that this dish invites creativity. You can keep it classic, or you can play — add spices, change the toppings, or even turn it into a dessert version. It’s forgiving, flexible, and fabulous, which is exactly what summer cooking should be.
And here’s the thing: food like this isn’t just about taste. It’s about the moments it creates. The way your kids might giggle as they bite into a cob on a stick. The way your friends might ask for “just one more” before the platter’s empty. The way you feel a little proud when someone says, “This is better than the fair.”
So here’s my challenge to you: make it, love it, and share it. Post your masterpiece with #CornGlowUp so we can swap ideas, cheer each other on, and maybe even inspire the next great corn-on-the-cob trend.
