Chicken Gyro

If your dinner routine feels like it’s been stuck in a spaghetti-and-meatballs time loop, it’s time to break free—and what better escape than a twirl into the fresh, zesty world of chicken gyros? We’re talking juicy marinated chicken, fluffy pita, tangy tzatziki, crunchy veggies, and all those sunshine-splashed Mediterranean flavors that taste like a vacation in every bite.

But don’t be fooled—just because gyros sound fancy doesn’t mean they’re hard. This Lou Lou Girls-style recipe makes classic Greek street food super accessible, totally family-friendly, and 100% plate-licking delicious. Whether you’re channeling your inner Greek goddess or just avoiding another boxed mac night, chicken gyros are here to save the dinner table 💪✨

My husband has always loved Gyros! When he worked downtown Salt Lake, he would go and get one from Crown Burger. The times that I would join him for lunch, he would get his gyro but I didn’t think it would be something I would like. I was wrong!

The chicken is marinated in spices to create a delicious chicken. Then you add the cucumber sauce and the fresh veggies….it takes your breath away! So good!!

Chicken Gyro

I like to use my grill, letting them get beautifully charred and smoky but if you reside in a very cold climate with no Spring insight (like me in Utah), these can be thrown on a cast iron grill pan instead. You should still be able to get that charred goodness! Again, you can bake and pan fry as well.

💡 Pro Tips to Go From Great to GREEK-tastic

  • Use Chicken Thighs for Extra Flavor They’re juicier than breasts and perfect for that street-food authenticity.
  • Skip the Store-Bought Pita Try naan or flatbreads for a softer bite—or make your own with flour, yeast, and yogurt!
  • Amp Up the Veggies Add shredded carrots, cucumber ribbons, or grilled zucchini for a fresh twist.
  • Don’t Forget the Chill Tzatziki improves the longer it chills. Make it an hour ahead if you can!
  • Meal Prep Hack Marinate chicken Sunday night. Cook and slice Monday, and store in fridge for grab-and-go gyros all week!

📝 Ingredients You’ll Need

For the chicken marinade:

  • 1½ lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs or breasts
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp. plain Greek yogurt (makes it tender!)
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper

For assembling:

  • Pita bread or naan rounds
  • Fresh lettuce or shredded romaine
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Thinly sliced red onions
  • Feta crumbles (optional but highly encouraged!)
  • Tzatziki sauce—store-bought or homemade (see recipe below!)

🍗 Step-by-Step Lou Lou GIRLS Gyro Time!

1. Mix & Marinate

In a large bowl or zip bag, combine olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, yogurt, and spices. Add chicken and let it marinate at least 30 minutes—overnight for max flavor! The yogurt makes the chicken ultra tender, and the lemon gives it that subtle zing.

2. Cook Chicken

Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook chicken 5–6 minutes per side until beautifully golden and cooked through. Let it rest 5 minutes, then slice thinly. (You want those juicy layers!)

3. Prep Veggies & Pita

Warm your pita bread slightly—either on a pan or wrapped in foil in the oven. Chop tomatoes, slice onions, and get your lettuce ready. This is your gyro garden!

4. Make Tzatziki (optional but amazing!)

In a small bowl mix:

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • ½ cucumber, grated and squeezed dry
  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and dill to taste

Refrigerate until ready—seriously, this is what makes your gyro SING!

5. Assemble & Devour

Layer chicken slices, veggies, and a generous drizzle of tzatziki on your warm pita. Add feta if desired, wrap it up burrito-style or fold taco-style, and get ready to opa your way through dinner! 🥙

🤔 FAQs You Didn’t Know You Had

Can I bake the chicken instead of grilling? Yep! Lay on a baking sheet at 400°F for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through. Slice and serve!

What’s the best way to slice it gyro-style? Let chicken rest after cooking! Then cut into thin strips—diagonal cuts work best for that street-cart feel.

How long does tzatziki last? Up to 4–5 days in the fridge—store it in an airtight container. Just stir before serving.

Can I meal-prep these gyros? Absolutely! Store cooked chicken, sliced veggies, and sauce separately. Reheat chicken as needed.

No pita? No problem? Use lettuce wraps for a low-carb take or serve as a gyro bowl over rice or quinoa!

🌿 Healthy Hacks (Without Sacrificing Flavor!)

  • Swap pita for whole wheat versions or lettuce wraps
  • Use low-fat Greek yogurt in tzatziki
  • Amp the veggies—cucumbers, spinach, red cabbage, bell peppers
  • Choose grilled or baked chicken over pan-fried
  • Reduce sodium by skipping extra salt and using fresh ingredients

Gyros can be indulgent and balanced. We love an “extra tzatziki, hold the guilt” kind of moment.

🧊 Storage & Leftover Love

  • Fridge: Chicken lasts up to 4 days. Tzatziki keeps 5 days.
  • Freezer: Cooked chicken slices freeze well—reheat in skillet for crisp edges.
  • Leftovers Tip: Make a gyro quesadilla or toss ingredients into a fresh salad for a whole new meal!

Chicken Gyro

The chicken gyro is humble, zesty, and deeply comforting. It doesn’t require a Greek passport or professional culinary skills—just some lemon, garlic, and willingness to wrap deliciousness in a fluffy pita. It’s versatile, budget-friendly, and packs enough flavor to turn any Tuesday night into a Mediterranean feast.

Dinner doesn’t have to be complicated to taste epic. It just needs some love, a little spice, and maybe a dollop of dreamy tzatziki. 💕
