Chicken Casserole Topped With Ritz

This Chicken Casserole Topped With Ritz is the definition of cozy, creamy, crunchy perfection. It’s the kind of dish that makes the whole house smell like home, with tender chicken, cheesy pasta, and a buttery cracker topping that’s basically irresistible.

It’s:

  • Perfect for weeknights — minimal prep, maximum flavor.
  • Crowd-approved — picky eaters and foodies alike will go back for seconds.
  • Make-ahead friendly — assemble, chill, and bake when you’re ready.

When I decided to share this recipe with you, I realized that I haven’t used any cream of soups for awhile! At the first of my marriage, it felt like every recipe that I would make, had a can of cream soup.

We didn’t have the internet back then, so you relied on recipes that were passed down from generation to generation. I remember one time my grandma wanted me to make a certain dish and she brought over the recipe card and the ingredients. Now all we have to do, is look on Google and we find so many delicious things to make.

This creamy deliciousness has all the feels of your grandmas cooking but can be made in minutes because of all convenient things we have now!

👩‍🍳 Cooking Tips for the Best Ritz-Topped Casserole

  • Use rotisserie chicken — Saves time and adds flavor.
  • Don’t overcook pasta — Slightly undercook so it stays firm after baking.
  • Extra crispy topping — Broil for 1–2 minutes at the end (watch closely).
  • Full-fat dairy — Sour cream and cheese with full fat = richer flavor.
  • Make ahead — Assemble, cover, and refrigerate up to 24 hours before baking.

🎨 Recipe Variations

  • Veggie Boost — Add peas, broccoli, or spinach to the mix.
  • Spicy Kick — Stir in diced green chiles or jalapeños.
  • BBQ Twist — Swap chicken broth for BBQ sauce and use cheddar cheese.
  • Turkey Swap — Use leftover Thanksgiving turkey instead of chicken.
  • Gluten-Free — Use GF pasta and crackers.

🧒 Kid Tips

  • Let kids crush the Ritz crackers in a zip-top bag — fun and safe.
  • Serve with carrot sticks or apple slices for a balanced plate.
  • Keep spice levels mild for little taste buds.
  • Let them sprinkle the cheese layer for a “chef’s helper” moment.

🛒 Grocery Hacks

  • Buy chicken in bulk — Cook, shred, and freeze in portions.
  • Stock up on pasta sales — It lasts forever in the pantry.
  • Store-brand soups — Often just as good for less.
  • Ritz cracker clearance — Grab seasonal flavors for fun twists.
  • Cheese in bulk — Freeze shredded cheese in 2-cup portions.
