Picture this: it’s a cozy afternoon, the aroma of fresh-brewed coffee swirling through the air, and there you stand, staring into your pantry, craving the perfect sweet fix. You could raid the chip aisle or risk a trip to the store, but why not whip up a batch of homemade milk chocolate chip cookies that ooze warmth, comfort, and big chewy hugs in every bite?

These cookies are more than just a quick sugar hit. They’re a ritual of self-care, a mini celebration wrapped in golden edges and a soft, pillowy center. With pantry staples—butter, sugar, flour—and a generous scoop of those dreamy milk chocolate chips, you’re minutes away from cookie nirvana.

What really sets these cookies apart is the alchemy of technique and timing. Creaming butter and sugars aerates the dough, giving you those delicate cracks on top. Chilling the dough for an hour lets flavors meld, prevents runaway spreading, and yields the ideal cookie “hug factor.” And baking just until the edges whisper “crispy” while the centers stay slightly under baked means every mouthful is a textural wonder.

Lisa loves chocolate chip cookies! Not just a little bit but there is a true love going on. She will text me from school and ask me to make cookies. I have tweaked a lot of recipes in the past and thought they were pretty darn good but they don’t compare to this recipe. It’s a keeper!

BEST CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

Ingredients

  • 1 stick of butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt until combined. Set aside.
Using a separate mixing bowl, either with a stand mixer or a hand mixer, cream together the softened butter and sugars on medium-high speed until the mixture is light and fluffy and a pale yellow color, about 2 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl occasionally as needed. Add egg and vanilla, and beat on medium speed until combined, about 30 seconds. Add the dry ingredient mixture, and beat on medium-low speed until just combined.
Fold in the chocolate chips, until they are evenly combined.
Refrigerate it for 1 hour, or until it is chilled through. Then once the batch of dough is completely chilled, remove it from the refrigerator. Scoop out and roll dough balls that are 1-inch in diameter. Then place the dough balls on a baking sheet that is covered with either parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
Bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are slightly crispy and the tops of the cookies are very lightly golden. The centers may look slightly under-cooked.
Remove the cookies and let them cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes.

Cooking Tips

  • Always measure flour correctly by spooning it into your measuring cup and leveling off with a knife. Too much flour equals cakey cookies, not that perfect chew.
  • Room-temperature egg and butter cream together more smoothly than chilled ingredients, resulting in light, airy dough.
  • Don’t skip the dough chill. Chilling firms up the butter so cookies spread less, plus flavors deepen over time.
  • Scoop dough with a disher or cookie scoop to ensure uniform size. Even baking = predictable batch quality.
  • Rotate the baking sheet halfway through bake time to counter hot spots in your oven.
  • If you prefer extra melty chips, press a few additional chocolate chips onto the tops of each cookie right after they come out of the oven.
  • Use a digital kitchen scale for bulletproof accuracy on butter and flour—your dough will thank you.
  • For a crispier cookie, bake for an extra 1–2 minutes; for a chewier center, err on the shorter side of baking time.

Recipe Variations

  • Double Chocolate Chunk Delight
Swap ½ cup of flour for unsweetened cocoa powder and replace milk chocolate chips with dark chocolate chunks. You’ll have rich, fudgy pillows of chocolate heaven.
  • Nutty Oat Crunch
Stir in ½ cup old-fashioned oats and ½ cup chopped toasted walnuts or pecans. The oats add a hearty chew and the nuts contribute a toasty crunch.
  • Peanut Butter Pop
Replace half the butter with smooth peanut butter. Fold in a handful of mini Reese’s peanut butter cups or swirl in peanut butter chips for sweet-and-salty magic.
  • Caramel Sea Salt Swirl
After baking, immediately press a soft caramel candy into the center of each cookie, sprinkle with flaky sea salt, and let cool. Cue the “oh wow” reactions.
  • Spiced Autumn Cookies
Add 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, and a pinch of ground ginger to the dry ingredients. Fold in white chocolate chips and dried cranberries for a festive twist.
  • Gluten-Free Version
Use a cup-for-cup gluten-free flour blend in place of all-purpose flour. Add 1 teaspoon xanthan gum if your blend doesn’t already include it. Cookies bake in the same time, just watch for gentle browning.

Kid Tips

  • Turn cookie rolling into a game: whoever makes the roundest dough ball wins “Cookie Architect of the Day.”
  • Let little helpers press chocolate chips into dough balls before baking—perfect for fine motor practice and pride in their creations.
  • Provide a tiny pinch of coarse sugar or sprinkles for kids to decorate each dough ball. Snap a photo of the rainbow cookies before popping them into the oven.
  • Teach counting by having kids divide dough into four equal portions before scooping smaller balls—mountain of math disguised as fun.
  • Have your mini sous-chef smell and taste-test vanilla extract, then guess the aroma notes (hint: sweet, floral, warm).
  • After baking, use leftover dough trimmings to form “cookie crumbs” for ice cream sundae toppings—no morsel goes to waste!

Grocery Hacks

  • Buy butter in bulk when it goes on sale and freeze extra sticks in labeled, airtight freezer bags. Defrost in the fridge overnight when you’re ready to bake.
  • Brown sugar tends to harden; keep it pliable by storing it with a slice of fresh bread or a terracotta brown sugar saver.
  • Grab eggs from the bargain bin if they’re close to the sell-by date—they’re still perfect for baking as long as the shell’s intact.
  • Stock up on shelf-stable chocolate chips when they’re on sale. They last for months in a cool, dry pantry.
  • Keep cornstarch on hand for that dreamy cookie texture—and you can also use it to thicken sauces, make your own powdered sugar, or crisp up chicken in a pinch.
  • Watch store flyers for vanilla extract: pure vanilla occasionally goes on discount. A small upgrade in your pantry yields luxury flavor dividends
