Video Curriculum With StikBots: The Fun, Creative Way to Turn Kids Into Movie Makers 🎬
Video Curriculum With StikBots! Video curriculum ideas were hard to come by when I was a teacher. We used StikBots at my film camp this year though, and though they are just toys, I realized how amazing of a teaching tool they can be so I thought I’d share. They are fun, easy for students of all ages to use, and provide a great way to teach a wide variety of video concepts, or can even use as a fun way for students to create videos about other subjects.
If your kids love making videos, building stories, and playing with toys… get ready to blow their minds with a simple idea: turning playtime into a mini filmmaking school.
Yes, really.
Because today we’re talking about Video Curriculum with StikBots — a playful, creative, surprisingly educational activity that teaches kids how movies are made while they’re having a blast creating their own stop-motion films.
And here’s the best part…
Kids don’t even realize they’re learning.
They just think they’re making awesome videos.
Parents think they’re playing with toys.
Teachers know the truth.
They’re actually learning filmmaking, storytelling, technology, art, and creativity all at once.
And if that doesn’t feel like a parenting win, I don’t know what does.
So grab your phone, gather the kids, and prepare to turn your kitchen table into a Hollywood movie studio… Lou Lou Girls style.
StikBots are inexpensive action figures meant to be used in stop motion videos. They bend and stick in all sorts of ways. The StikBot Studio App is FREE and designed for all ages to be able to create stop motion animations. The app even has green screen capabilities and when paired with the StikBot Studio Pro Kit you have everything you need to make a great video!
Let’s talk about something important.
Kids today live in a video-first world.
They watch videos.
They share videos.
They learn from videos.
They communicate through videos.
But here’s the twist.
Most kids are only consuming content, not creating it.
And that’s exactly why learning simple filmmaking skills can be such an incredible opportunity.
When kids learn how videos are made, they start thinking differently about media. Instead of just watching videos, they begin understanding how stories are structured, how scenes are created, and how visuals communicate ideas.
Suddenly the world becomes a little more creative.
A little more imaginative.
And a lot more interactive.
Enter one of the most fun teaching tools ever created:
StikBots.
StikBots are poseable action figures with suction-cup hands and feet that allow them to stick to surfaces and be positioned in countless ways, making them perfect for creating stop-motion animation videos.
With the help of the free StikBot Studio app, kids can take photos frame by frame, turning tiny movements into animated movies right on their phone or tablet.
And suddenly…
Kids aren’t just playing with toys.
They’re learning:
• storytelling
• animation
• filmmaking
• sound design
• editing
• creativity
• problem solving
In other words…
They’re learning skills that actual filmmakers use.
Not bad for a toy that fits in your hand.
The Lou Lou Girls blog originally highlighted how StikBots became a surprisingly powerful teaching tool in a film camp setting, helping kids understand video concepts like frame rate, sound effects, and green screen editing.
And honestly?
Once you see how excited kids get about making their own movies…
You’ll understand why.
Kids LOVE being creators.
They love making something from nothing.
They love telling stories.
They love sharing what they made.
And when they realize they can create their own movies?
Game.
Changer.

Video Curriculum With StikBots
WHAT YOU NEED:
Ipads or Iphones or Android Devices
StikBots App
StikBot Studio Pro Kit

LESSONS:
The History of Filmmaking: Talk about early cinema concepts and “moving pictures”, how the first camera’s worked, and how the first films were short and didn’t have sound. Have your students make a short StikBot video to be like the first-ever “movies”.
Frame Rate: Have the students make a StikBot video and show them (in the app) how the frame rate controls how quickly it changes from picture to picture. (I was surprised at how quickly even our ten-year-old students were able to understand frame rate after this!)
Chroma Key: Talk about Chroma Key and how to use a green screen. Show them (in the app) how to key out green or blue and add an image. Have them use the green screen or blue screen in the studio pro kit to create a video.
Sound Effects/Music/Voice Overs: In the app, you can add music and sound effects as well as record voiceovers. (I thought this would be a little complicated for the youngest kids be they did a great job!)
Frame-by-frame Animation: and of course, you can easily teach them frame-by-frame animation!

Whether you’re giving StikBot toys as a gift, or using them in the classroom, they are a great way for kids to learn about filmmaking. I loved using them to teach because the kids were able to stay in one place but learn many concepts at once. I was amazed at how quickly they were able to use the App and loved that they were having so much fun doing it!
