This chocolate cake is not new to the blog. I originally published it over seven years ago. In fact, we have used this recipe so many times! Cassie has used it when she made one of her fancy cakes!
I was going through the blog and realized that the pictures had disappeared! I felt like it was my duty to bring some life back into the old, but really delicious recipe!

The batter is built from cake royalty:
- 1 cup baking cocoa
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 2 ½ cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- ¾ cup butter
- 3 cups cake flour
- 2 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup sour cream
The Frosting Game Is Strong:
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup butter, cubed
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 4½ to 5 cups powdered sugar

- Dissolve the cocoa in boiling water. Let it cool—patience is a virtue.
- Cream the butter and sugar until you’ve got a cloud of fluffy goodness.
