- Budget-friendly — pantry staples + one can of soda.
- Crowd-approved — kids and grown-ups will fight for seconds.
I love sloppy joes! We have sloppy joes for special occasions at our house! My girls request them even on their birthday! I have been making my grandma’s recipe for over 40 years and we absolutely love this recipe. When I found this new recipe, I was a little skeptical about if it could measure up to our favorite.
While I was making it my husband was putting his nose up and said he wouldn’t eat it. After one bite, he was sold! This recipe is more a BBQ flavor, and it’s “moreish”!!! Your family will love it!

Dr Pepper Sloppy Joes
Ingredients
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 1 small green bell pepper, small diced
- 3 to 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 1 1/2 cup Dr Pepper
- 4 Tablespoons ketchup
- 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the onion and bell pepper, cook until fully softened (about 10 minutes).
Stir in the minced garlic and cook until fragrant (only about 30 seconds.)
Then add in the ground beef. Break it up into crumbles and cook until there is no pink left (about 8-10 minutes.)
Drain off any excess fat then put back into the skillet. Pour in the tomato sauce, Dr. Pepper, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
Bring to a simmer (uncovered) then turn down the heat to medium-low. Gently simmer for 10 minutes until thickened but still saucy.
At this point, it’s important to taste and adjust the seasoning to your preferences. Serve on buns and enjoy!

👩🍳 Cooking Tips for the Best Sloppy Joes
- Toast the buns — it keeps them from getting soggy and adds flavor.
- Simmer longer for a thicker sauce that clings to the meat.
- Use lean beef (85/15) for the perfect balance of flavor and juiciness.
- Taste and tweak — add more vinegar for tang, more ketchup for sweetness.
- Make ahead — the flavors deepen after a night in the fridge.
🎨 Recipe Variations
- BBQ Twist — Swap half the tomato sauce for your favorite BBQ sauce.
- Spicy Kick — Add diced jalapeños or a pinch of red pepper flakes.
- Turkey Swap — Use ground turkey for a lighter version.
- Veggie Style — Replace beef with lentils or plant-based crumbles.
- Cheesy Melt — Top with shredded cheddar and broil until bubbly.
🧒 Kid Tips
- Serve on slider buns for little hands.
- Let kids sprinkle shredded cheese on top.
- Keep spice mild — skip the pepper if needed.
- Pair with sweet potato fries for a fun, colorful plate.
