🍞 Best Sandwich Bread — The Loaf That Loves You Back

If bread could give you a pep talk, this would be the one cheering you on from the counter.

Best Sandwich Bread

Some breads are rustic. Some breads are fancy. And then there’s sandwich bread — the everyday hero of the kitchen. It’s the bread that holds your PB&J together, makes grilled cheese golden and gooey, and turns a humble turkey slice into a full‑blown meal.

But here’s the thing: homemade sandwich bread is on a whole different level. It’s soft, fluffy, slightly sweet from honey, and sturdy enough to handle all the fillings you can dream up. Plus, it makes your house smell like heaven.

💬 Reader prompt: Are you a “heel of the loaf” person who loves the crusty end piece, or do you go straight for the soft middle slices?

I don’t know about you but if I’m going to eat bread it’s got to be worth my calories! This is the recipe I use for both wheat and white bread! Sawyer likes the wheat bread like me! I just replace some of the flour in the recipe with wheat flour to make the wheat.

Just know the more you add the the more dense it will be but I do about 2/3rds wheat flour when I make wheat bread. Also, sometimes it requires a little more flour to reach the correct consistency, sticky dough but not to the point that it sticks to your fingers!

Ingredients

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 2 c. milk, scalded then cooled to room temperature
  • 4 Tbsp. melted butter, slightly cooled
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 6-7 c. Bread Flour- for wheat do 4 cups wheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. honey

Directions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine yeast, warm water, and 1 Tbsp. sugar. Let the yeast get bubbly.
  2. Place milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil and remove from heat. Allow cooling slightly.
  3. Melt the butter in the microwave and set aside.
  4. Add the sugar, honey, milk, and 3 1/2 c. flour to the yeast mixture. Beat together for two minutes.
  5. Add butter, eggs, and salt. Stir well.
  6. Add the rest of the flour a half a cup at a time until the dough begins to separate from the sides of the bowl. Let it rest for 3-5 minutes.
  7. Knead the dough in the bowl for 5 minutes. If the dough seems sticky to you add a tablespoon of flour at a time until it reaches a good consistency. Sticky but not dough not staying on your fingers
  8. Remove dough from the bowl and grease the inside of the bowl.
  9. Place the dough back in the bowl and flip it around till the entire outside is nice and shiny with the oil.
  10. Loosely cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow the dough to double in size, which takes a little over an hour and sometimes longer in my cold house.
  11. Once the dough has doubled, smash it down with your fists for about a minute.
  12. Form dough into loaves and place in the bread pan and cover lightly with plastic wrap. Allow the dough to double in size
again (about 2 hours). Or put in the fridge overnight. Then pull out of the fridge and let warm to room temperature for an hour or 2.
  13. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes,
or until golden brown. Immediately rub the tops with a little bit of butter for
    that fabulous shine. Enjoy!

It’s also endlessly adaptable. You can keep it classic, make it wheat, swirl in cinnamon, or shape it into rolls. And because it freezes beautifully, you can bake once and enjoy fresh bread all week.

Here’s the thing about sandwich bread — it’s more than just slices. It’s the foundation of family lunches, the base of comfort food dinners, and the smell that makes your house feel like home.

And this homemade version? It’s a little extra special. It’s soft, golden, and made with love. It’s forgiving, flexible, and always delicious.

So here’s my challenge to you: bake it, share it, and tell me your twist. Did you go wheat? Did you add herbs? Did you eat a slice warm from the oven with butter melting into every nook? (No judgment — I’ve been there.) Snap a pic, post it, and tag it so we can all drool together.

💬 Reader prompt: Should we do a “Homemade Staples” series next? I’m thinking sandwich bread, tortillas, and maybe even homemade bagels.
