🍀🌈 5 FUN ST. PATRICK’S DAY TRADITIONS FOR KIDS (THE LoulouGirls WAY — MAGICAL, EASY & FULL OF CHAOS)

If you’ve ever wanted a holiday that’s low‑pressure, high‑fun, and full of magical mischief, St. Patrick’s Day is your new best friend.

5 Fun St Patrick's Day Traditions for Kids

Now that Cooper, my one-year-old, is starting to get old enough to know what’s going on, I want to start making Holidays fun for him. Here are a few things I thought of for St. Patrick’s Day but if you do something really fun that your kids love please share!! I need more ideas!

Let’s talk about St. Patrick’s Day for a second.

It’s the one holiday that sneaks up on you. It’s not a “big” holiday. It’s not a “plan for months” holiday. It’s not a “buy 47 gifts and wrap them beautifully” holiday.

It’s a fun holiday. A simple holiday. A green‑everything holiday. A “throw some sprinkles on it and call it festive” holiday.

And honestly? That’s why we love it.

St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect excuse to:

  • Add magic to your morning
  • Surprise your kids
  • Create silly memories
  • Make a mess
  • Laugh together
  • Celebrate for no reason other than FUN

Plus:

  • Playful asides
  • Reader prompts
  • Extra ideas
  • Bonus traditions
  • A warm, community‑building conclusion

Reader Prompt : Do your kids love silly holidays or do they wake up suspicious of anything “too fun”?

5 Fun St Patrick’s Day Traditions for Kids

🍀 1. LEPRECHAUN TRAPS (THE CHAOS YOUR KIDS LIVE FOR)

Leprechaun traps are the Super Bowl of St. Patrick’s Day traditions.

Kids LOVE them. Parents tolerate them. Glitter gets everywhere. Memories are made.

✔️ How to Make a Leprechaun Trap

Use anything you have:

  • Shoeboxes
  • Toilet paper rolls
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Construction paper
  • Glitter (if you’re brave)
  • Tape, glue, hope, and chaos

Let your kids design the trap however they want. The more ridiculous, the better.

✔️ What Happens Overnight

The leprechaun “escapes,” of course — but not before leaving:

  • Green footprints
  • Gold coins
  • A silly note
  • A tiny mess
  • A trail of glitter
  • A clue to a treasure hunt

Playful aside: If your leprechaun trap looks like it was built by a sleep‑deprived raccoon, congratulations — you did it right.

Reader Prompt: What’s the funniest thing your kids have ever added to their trap?

🌈 2. GREEN BREAKFAST (THE EASIEST WAY TO BLOW THEIR MINDS)

Kids LOVE themed food. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It doesn’t have to be healthy. It just has to be GREEN.

✔️ Easy Green Breakfast Ideas

  • Green pancakes
  • Green waffles
  • Green scrambled eggs
  • Green milk
  • Green yogurt
  • Green fruit salad
  • Lucky Charms (the official cereal of St. Patrick’s Day)

✔️ Mom Hack

Use food coloring sparingly unless you want your kids’ tongues to look like they licked a marker.

Playful aside: If your kids scream when they see green eggs, tell them the leprechaun made them. Blame everything on the leprechaun.

🪙 3. GOLD COIN TREASURE HUNT (THE CROWD FAVORITE)

This one is EASY and kids go wild for it.

✔️ How It Works

Hide gold coins around the house:

  • Plastic coins
  • Chocolate coins
  • Paper coins
  • Real coins (if you’re feeling generous)

Give your kids a basket and let them hunt.

✔️ Bonus Ideas

  • Add clues
  • Make it a scavenger hunt
  • Hide a “pot of gold” at the end
  • Add rainbow‑colored treats

Reader Prompt: Do your kids hunt calmly or do they turn into competitive treasure‑seeking pirates?

🌿 4. ST. PATRICK’S DAY CRAFTS (THE CUTE, THE SIMPLE & THE MESSY)

Crafts are optional — but adorable.

✔️ Easy Craft Ideas

  • Rainbow paper chains
  • Handprint leprechauns
  • Shamrock stamping with peppers
  • Rainbow bead bracelets
  • Pot‑of‑gold paper plates
  • Green slime (if you’re brave)

✔️ Mom Hack

Put down a tablecloth. A disposable one. Trust me.

Playful aside: If your craft turns out ugly, call it “abstract.” It’s fine.

5. RANDOM ACTS OF GREEN KINDNESS (THE SWEETEST TRADITION OF ALL)

This is the heart‑melting tradition your kids will remember forever.

Teach them that St. Patrick’s Day isn’t just about mischief — it’s about kindness.

✔️ Ideas for “Green Kindness”

  • Deliver treats to neighbors
  • Leave a kind note
  • Pick up litter
  • Do a chore for someone
  • Compliment a friend
  • Donate something
  • Help a sibling

✔️ Why It Works

It teaches:

  • Gratitude
  • Service
  • Joy
  • Compassion
  • The magic of giving

Reader Prompt: What’s one act of kindness your kids could do today?

🌈 BONUS TRADITIONS (BECAUSE YOU KNOW I CAN’T STOP AT 5)

⭐ Green Bath Time

Add green bath bombs or bubbles.

⭐ Rainbow Snack Board

Fruit + veggies + crackers in rainbow order.

⭐ St. Patrick’s Day Dance Party

Play Irish music and let the chaos unfold.

⭐ Lucky Notes

Write “lucky to have you” notes for each family member.

⭐ Leprechaun Footprints

Use washable paint or flour to make tiny footprints.

⭐ Green Outfits

Dress head‑to‑toe in green. Bonus points for tutus, suspenders, or shamrock sunglasses.

⭐ Rainbow Walk

Go outside and look for signs of spring.

🎉 PLAYFUL ASIDES TO SPRINKLE THROUGHOUT

  • “If your kids ask why the leprechaun didn’t leave a gift, tell them inflation.”
  • “If your toddler eats the gold coins, I’m so sorry.”
  • “If your green pancakes look questionable, call them ‘festive’ and move on.”
  • “If your kids wake up at 5 a.m. looking for leprechauns, that’s on you.”

St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t have to be expensive. It doesn’t have to be Pinterest‑perfect.

It just has to be FUN.

Whether you build a leprechaun trap, make a green breakfast, go on a treasure hunt, craft something adorable, or spread a little kindness… you’re creating memories your kids will carry with them forever.

You’re making magic. You’re building traditions. You’re giving your kids a childhood full of joy, silliness, and celebration.

And honestly? That’s what holidays are all about.

So go celebrate big. Celebrate silly. Celebrate with sprinkles, glitter, green food coloring, and all the chaos your heart can handle.

And come back to tell me which traditions your family loved — because this community is built on sharing ideas, cheering each other on, and making everyday moments feel magical.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, friend. May your day be lucky, loud, and full of laughter.

  1. We grew up with the leprechaun idea also. We would get up in the morning and the milk was always green. Progressing thru the day pancakes, cookies, potatoes etc were all ways tinted green. Good memories. Thank you for sharing with the Clever Chicks Blog Hop! I hope you’ll join us again next week!
