This is the kind of recipe that makes your family wander into the kitchen asking, “WHAT is that smell?” This is the kind of recipe that makes you feel like a culinary queen even if you’re cooking in leggings and a messy bun. This is the kind of recipe that makes leftovers feel like a gift from your past self.
And yes — it’s the kind of recipe that gets bookmarked, pinned, shared, screenshotted, and added to the “make this again immediately” list.
So let’s get into it. Long intro, no story — just pure hype, flavor, and kitchen confidence.
Ben and I are trying to eat healthier so I made some make ahead lunches from runawayapricot.com for him to take to work. We were both skeptical at first about whether or not they would taste good.
As soon as I tasted this rice though I was in heaven. It is soooo good! I gave it to my one year old too and he devoured it, so I wanted to make the recipe smaller so that I could make it just for a meal, but if you want to make some delicious lunches head on over here!
Let’s talk about Dirty Rice — but let’s talk about it the LouLouGirls way.
Dirty Rice is one of those dishes that checks every single box:
- Savory? Absolutely.
- A little spicy? Oh yes, she has personality.
- Comforting? Like a warm hug from someone who also compliments your outfit.
- Budget‑friendly? Your wallet will applaud.
- Meal‑prep friendly? This dish practically begs to be packed into containers.
- Kid‑approved? Shockingly, yes — especially if you let them sprinkle the scallions like confetti.
- Healthy-ish? Ground turkey + brown rice = balance, baby.
And here’s the thing: Dirty Rice is one of those recipes that sounds complicated but is actually easier than convincing your kids to put their shoes on the first time you ask.
It’s a one‑pan wonder. It’s a weeknight hero. It’s a “my in‑laws are coming over and I need something impressive but not stressful” lifesaver. It’s a “my fridge is looking a little sad but I still want something delicious” miracle.
And because we’re LouLouGirls around here, we’re not just making Dirty Rice — we’re making Amazing Dirty Rice. The kind that’s loaded with aromatics, layered with spices, kissed with heat, and finished with fresh cilantro that makes the whole thing taste like you know what you’re doing.
(You do. Obviously.)
Amazing Dirty Rice
INGREDIENTS:
1.5 C brown rice
2.5 C water
Olive Oil
1/2 red onion
4 cloves garlic
1/2 bunch scallions
1 lb. ground turkey
red pepper
garlic powder

chili powder
cinnamon
cumin
cayenne pepper

1/4 bunch of cilantro
Amazing Dirty Rice
DIRECTIONS:
1. Put in rice, water, and olive into a medium pot and bring to a rolling boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer without opening for 40 min, making sure the water hasn’t all evaporated.
2. Meanwhile, dice onion, chop garlic, and slice scallions.
3. Cook vegetables with 1 TBS of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
4. Add turkey to the skillet and cook for about 10 min until browned.
5. Add diced red pepper and season with the seasonings to taste.
6. Stir in half a bunch of cilantro, finely chopped.
7. Add cooked brown rice and adjust seasonings to taste.
