5 Awesome Kid Friendly Thanksgiving Day Activities!
I don’t know about you, but after eating all the food I’m going to eat on Thanksgiving day, I know I’m not going to have much desire to chase around and entertain my toddler. Luckily family has a big, extended family get-together every year and whoever is in charge usually has some great activities to entertain the kids. Here are the best of the best that we’ve done or that I think would be awesome to do in the future!
Because Thanksgiving is a magical holiday.
It’s cozy.
It’s meaningful.
It’s filled with incredible food and family time.
But if we’re being completely honest for a moment…
It’s also a very long day for kids.
Think about it.
There’s a lot of waiting.
Waiting for the turkey.
Waiting for the guests.
Waiting for the food.
Waiting for dessert.
And while the adults are chatting, cooking, and watching football…
The kids are usually wondering:
“What am I supposed to do now?”
Which is exactly why kid-friendly Thanksgiving activities are an absolute lifesaver.
Not only do they keep little hands busy and little minds entertained, but they also help kids feel included in the celebration.
And that’s actually a big deal.
Family holiday activities help children feel connected, build memories, and strengthen family bonds through shared experiences.
Plus, activities give kids a chance to participate in the meaning of the holiday — gratitude, kindness, creativity, and family traditions.
And when kids feel involved?
The day becomes more fun for everyone.
Which means fewer meltdowns.
Less boredom.
And maybe — just maybe — a peaceful Thanksgiving dinner.
(We can dream.)
So today we’re sharing 5 awesome kid-friendly Thanksgiving activities that are easy, fun, and perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and younger kids.
These ideas are:
• simple to set up
• budget-friendly
• creative
• interactive
• perfect for family memories
And because this is Lou Lou Girls, we’re sprinkling in a few fun reader prompts and mom-life asides along the way.
Because holidays are better when we celebrate together.
Ready?
Let’s keep those little turkeys entertained.
Why Thanksgiving Activities for Kids Matter
Before we jump into the activities, let’s talk about why these little moments matter so much.
Thanksgiving isn’t just about the meal.
It’s about connection.
It’s about slowing down.
It’s about gratitude.
And kids learn those values best when they’re involved in the celebration.
Activities help children practice patience, cooperation, and gratitude while spending quality time with family.
They also:
• encourage creativity
• build traditions
• create lasting memories
• keep kids happily busy
Which is why every family should have at least a few go-to Thanksgiving activities for kids.
Lou Lou Girls reader question:
Do your kids help with Thanksgiving traditions?
Or are they mostly focused on pie?
(No judgment here.)
5 Awesome Kid Friendly Thanksgiving Day Activities
1. Turkey Bowl Kids n’ Coaches: If you have a lot of kids in your family, try having a turkey bowl where you split the younger kids into multiple teams and the adults are the coaches. Depending on how many teams you have, play short mini-games in the style of a tournament.
2. Nerf Gun War: Although it sounds dangerous, even your toddlers will LOVE this as long as you make sure the older players are aware of them. Everyone just needs to show up with a gun and some darts and you will have a blast. We’ve also done it with pvc pipe guns and darts.
3. Mini Pumpkin Hunt: Remember all those mini pumpkins you bought for decor and are going to throw them away on Dec. 1? Hide them for the kiddos to find!
4. Coloring Table: This isn’t necessarily an activity but it can provide some great dinner entertainment for the kiddos! Set up a smaller size table and cover it with butcher paper for the kids to eat at. Set some crayons out and let the artists get to work!
5. Thankful Balloon Bash: Balloons are pretty fascinating to all of us so imagine a room full of balloons! Hand out one or a few balloons to everyone and have them write what they are thankful for on them. Once they’re done they can blow up their balloons and toss them in the middle. You could turn it into some sort of game (categorizing, finding similars, etc) or just let the kiddos enjoy running around in all that they’re grateful for!

Creating Thanksgiving Traditions Your Kids Will Remember
Here’s the beautiful thing about holiday activities.
They often turn into traditions.
The thankful tree becomes a yearly ritual.
The turkey craft becomes a memory.
The scavenger hunt becomes something kids look forward to every year.
And before you know it…
Your kids are grown.
And those traditions are the moments everyone remembers.
Not the perfectly cooked turkey.
Not the fancy decorations.
But the laughter.
The creativity.
The family time.
Making Thanksgiving Magical for Kids
Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be a long, boring day for kids waiting for the meal to start.
With a few simple activities, you can turn the holiday into a fun, meaningful celebration the whole family enjoys.
Whether kids are crafting colorful turkeys, hunting for feathers, playing Thanksgiving bingo, or helping in the kitchen, these little moments help them feel included in the holiday.
They learn about gratitude.
They build traditions.
And most importantly, they make memories with the people they love.
Because when kids are laughing, creating, and participating in the celebration, Thanksgiving becomes more than just a meal.
It becomes an experience they’ll remember for years.
