1. Memory Jar: Keep a jar in a significant area of your home (mantle, bedroom, kitchen window, etc.) with little slips of paper and a pencil near it. Anytime something significant, funny, exciting, or unusual happens write it on a slip of paper and put it in the jar. Read them on New Year’s day next year!
2. Photo/Video Yearbook: It is so easy and inexpensive to create photo books on sites like Shutterfly, why not do one each year for your family! I did a photo version for us last year and I love it!
3. Vacation Plan: Plan out vacations for the year ahead of time, even small ones. This helps keep you excited throughout the year and will motivate you to save your money!
4. Accomplishments and Goals List: Everyone seems to have it down that we make goals on new Year, but don’t forget to keep track of your accomplishments from the previous year as well! It is really amazing to look through the years and see the big and little things you were able to do, plus it helps motivate you to accomplish your new goals.
5. Money Jar: Create a jar where you put all the cash you get throughout the year. This is nice because for the most part we usually use credit cards so cash is easy to forget about. My husband and I started doing this only a few months ago, but we already have over $500!
6. Quote Board: Use a pinboard, chalkboard, box, etc., and write down all the funny things that get said in the home!
7. Letters of Appreciation: I think it’d be awesome to do what this person does, and keep a journal for each of your kids. Then you could write in it at least once a year and give it to them when they move out. Or if you don’t have kids yet, send letters of appreciation to those who were especially there for you throughout the year.
8. Before and After Pictures: With your New Year’s weight loss goal (I know we all have one…) be sure to take a before picture! Also, do this for your other goals or even just for your family. Even if you don’t get a professional photographer, take a photo in the same location at the start of each year to see how you’ve changed.
9. Books to Read: Reading is SOOO good for you! Don’t just create a wish list of books you want to read, actually go get them and put them around your house so that the next time you have a spare moment, you don’t get straight for the TV, you pick a book up instead.
10. Bucket List: Check your bucket list (or write one) and then actually schedule some on your calendar for the year. Even if you don’t get to all of them, you’re more likely to do them if you plan ahead.
