It’s surprising how furry family members become such a big part of your life. Buck, our Labrador, lived to be 15 years old and it broke out hearts when he died.  Buck was my youngest daughter’s companion and never left her side, so when he passed away there was a big hole in our family.

We thought we were done having pets because our kids are getting older and our life seems to be changing but my Lisa kept begging for a new dog. She wanted a male dog and preferably a Labrador but she found the perfect match with a mix of Labrador and Red healer, after she searched the internet for weeks. It was love at first sight!

Since Duke was a mix breed, we wanted to find out as much as possible so we can keep our newest family member healthy. Knowing the breeds in your dog can help you proactively plan for their health, nutrition and behavioral and training needs. Maybe you are like us, we thought we knew what breed our dog was but we didn’t know the whole story. Visual identification even by professionals is only accurate about 25% of the time!

Certain breeds may have a higher propensity for specific health issues, and knowing the breeds within your dog, can help you be on the lookout for any health concerns or common issues You can also look up breed information to develop a training program that works with your dog’s natural instincts and also develop a nutrition plan for breed specific needs for your dog.

That’s why we chose Wisdom Panel® Canine DNA Test(s) ! They have the largest breed database on the market covering 250 breeds, types and varieties. The test uses 1,800 markers for breed and disease detection and a proprietary algorithm that makes more than 18,000,000 calculations before assigning a final family tree. The test is done at home using two swabs- no blood necessary, and you get the results back in 2 to 3 weeks from the time the test reaches the lab.

We were so excited to get the results back from the test about our Duke because now we can take better care of him and know what to expect in the future pertaining to his health.  Plus it was really fun to see all the information that they give to you, it was almost like Christmas when we received the results!
