This is a super fun way to entertain kids for a long time. It takes a significant amount of time and rubber bands to make your watermelon explode under all that pressure, but the anticipation is really one of the best parts. Keep reading…

Watermelon Explosion Experiment

  1. First, put the watermelon on something that will help it balance. You could use a bucket to hold it in place, or you could make a small ring with a pool noodle. We just used some scrap wood to prop it up on three sides.
  2. Next, Make sure you’re in a place that you don’t mind getting messy! Outside is best!
  3. Now’s the fun part, pull the rubber bands around the melon again and again. Make sure you focus on putting them on top of each other, so the pressure isn’t spread out all over the melon.
  4. We had 12 kids helping so when one would get bored, another would step in and start adding them.
  5. When it started looking like it was being squeezed, we moved the watermelon to the lawn to prevent a mess on the concrete.
  6. Finally, it took about 500 rubber bands to make the watermelon explode! Enjoy!
