DIY Giant Chalkboard Tutorial

DIY Giant Chalkboard Tutorial!

DIY Giant Chalkboard Tutorial

My kitchen is seriously lacking color. It’s pretty much white and bland right now, and I really want to add a LOT of colors!

This is my first attempt at spicing up the boring icy kitchen. A HUGE GIANT chalkboard! Yay! I love it! I haven’t perfected the fancy writing yet, but these things take time! 😉

I plan on writing our Menu for the week on it, along with my grocery list and upcoming events. I’m thinking I’ll spice it up for holidays with cutesy sayings and such, you know, the usual chalkboard things!

This project is a pretty basic project, and if I can do it, you can too! You just need the right tools and supplies.

SUPPLIES

  • 2- 6″x 1″ x 10′ boards, Cut into 2- 6′ sections and 2- 3′ sections.
  • 1 thin board sheet. The Home Depot Cut it for us. It was 2′ x 5′ (I’m not sure what this was called. Refer to the picture below.)
  • Miter Saw
  • Wood Glue
  • Air Compressor
  • Staple Gun
  • Wood Filler
  • Staples
  • Spray Paint
  • Chalk Paint (Spray can please!)
  • Router (optional, you can skip this step and it will still look awesome!)
  • Wire
  • 2 screws

DIRECTIONS

Start by cutting each of your boards on a 45-degree angle with a miter saw. Glue the edges with wood glue and staple the corners together.

Now it’s time to decide on your pattern. You could either project an image onto your board, or you could free-hand it as we did.

We taped the paper together that was half the length of the board. We drew the design we wanted on it, cut it out, and traced it onto the board.

Then we flipped it over so each side would be the same.

This is the board we used. It was smooth and thin. We had the good people at The Home Depot cut it for us.

Then we spray painted it with chalkboard paint. Don’t try to roll it! We did, and we failed. It was too bumpy!

While the chalkboard was drying we filled the angles of the frame with wood filler. We weighted the board down with sandbags to make sure it didn’t try to warp.

Now here’s an optional part. We used a router to finish the edges on the inside and around the outside of the frame.

It was our first time using a router and it was super easy. The frame was cute without it too, but I just wanted it to look more finished and professional.

As you can see, I tested the color before we routed it, but you’ll want to wait until you’re done routing it to paint it. Spray paint works best here. We chose Coral spray paint with a Matte finish.

Once you’ve painted the frame, it’s time to staple the chalkboard to the frame. Just staple away! It’s pretty fun!

If you’re going to hang it, here’s an easy solution. Screw two small 1/2 ” screws into the outer edges of the board and wrap a wire around each.

Now flip it and hang it! Yay, Your chalkboard is complete!
