Youth Sports? Great, Let’s Play Safe!

Being a mom of 6 kids, we have had the opportunity to be involved in tons of sport activities through the years. We believe that you try your hardest and do your best each and every time you play. In fact, our family motto is: Lewis’ never give up!
As a family, we have been pretty lucky when it comes to injuries. We had had one broken leg, couple of sprain ankles, a concussion and a couple deep bone bruises. That isn’t much if you consider the amount of kids and the amount of sports!
My fifteen year old is the catcher for her softball team. Miss Andie is only 5 foot and weighs nothing. She is sassy and determined that no one will come home and score while she is playing catch! WP_20140513_002
Andie was playing catch and the girl from the other team was on third, trying to score. Every time the girl would try to steal home, Andie would throw the ball to third, trying to get her out. The girl was covered with dirt from the top of her head to her itty bitty toes. Finally, the girl had a chance to come home and she was running with all her might and Andie was blocking the plate, determined the girl would not be safe!
The girl plowed over Andie, and Andie’s leg was hurt! We took her to the doctor and the x ray revealed that there wasn’t a break in her leg but she needed to rest it because it was a deep bone bruise.  sf drill
Aflac has a safety tip list that you can use for any sport to keep your little athlete healthy.

  • Lots of Gear! Wear all the necessary gear and safety gear each time you practice and play.
  • Follow the rules: You must obey the rules. It will keep you safe.
  • Listen to your body: If at any point you feel pain, notify your coach and get out of the game. Pushing through injuries increases the severity and keeps you out of action longer.
  • Take the doctor’s orders: Always listen to your doctor. It is important to always check with a doctor before attempting any activity following an injury.
  • Make sure you’re covered: Accidents happen. Make sure you’re prepared with supplemental insurance to cover out of pocket expenses.
